AHI Architectural Heritage Intervention

Piscine d'Ixelles is the oldest swimming pool in the Brussels-Capital Region and one of the oldest in Belgium. Built between 1900 and 1904 by the architects Alexandre Cooreman and Jules Rau, the building has retained its main heritage features, with the exception of the roof structure, which was modified in 1945. The entire building is listed since 2007. This renovation project is the first total renovation of the site since its construction. The historic entrance from « Rue de la Natation » (The Swimming street), the pool and the individual changing cabins have been restored to their original state. The pool tank has been preserved as a historic example of early reinforced concrete. A newly-built extension provides an entrance and reception area for groups and people with reduced mobility. The entire building has been adapted to the contemporary swimming pool standards and energy performance requirements. The project pays tribute to the construction techniques used at the time by the implication of local craftsman and artisans.
