AHI Architectural Heritage Intervention

La Carbonería is a highly symbolic building in Barcelona. Its rehabilitation implied dealing with diverse politics, sensibilities, history and stories. Using them carefully and intelligently has been as relevant as the attention given to its material heritage, to its structure and spaces. Built in 1864, the oldest building of Cerda’s Eixample, it had troubled beginnings. Its developer, Narcis Tarragó, was unsure if the old ‘Wall street’ would be transformed into the Boulevard that the Town Hall desired, against Cerda´s designs. Its paradoxical design reflects this uncertainty, with the facade holding the larger openings finally hidden from view. The stair and elevator were moved to the farthest corner of the patio, connecting to the façade and each individual dwelling by aerial walkways, and creating views and a three-dimensional communal space. The preexisting structure was preserved and the bearing wall was emphasized by storage and conducts areas, while openings in it connect visually the patio and the street as conceived by Cerdà.
