The refurbishment and extension of the Ragenhaus is situated in the historical centre of Bruneck, a unique agglomeration characterized by a series of aristocratic villas featuring large gardens enclosed by walls. One of those villas, the Ragenhaus, is home to the current music school. Enhancing the urban identity of the city, the school extension develops in continuity with the building typology and urban setting. A new inhabited wall hosts the new program and encloses a new garden which becomes the reference space for classrooms. This inhabited border gives continuity to the existing fabric, reinterpreting the original typology and completing the urban layout subjected to conservation. Moreover, it highlights the presence of the Ragenhaus, so that the extension is understood as a low-key building that complements the pre-existing architecture. The exterior and interior architecture of the original building becomes the protagonist, whereas the new architecture adds new spaces and gives shape to the garden, a silent and valued space.
