The Ancient Ceramics of Coimbra is located in the buffer zone of the “University of Coimbra - Alta e Sofia” complex, classified as UNESCO World Heritage. This is a handmade ceramics factory, the last pottery in Portugal. The project proposes the rehabilitation of the building both for its architectural, industrial and typological characteristics, as well as for its historical and immaterial value. Thus, the proposal created a museological route inserted in a cafeteria, in which the work of artisans, technologies and performances on materials are exposed in-situ, constituting the central elements of the route. Being a century-old industrial building, its morphology developed by addition and subtraction over the centuries, contributing to its irregular geometry and making the building an ensemble of “architectural pieces”. The proposed solution is based on a compromise between seeking to preserve the particular characteristics of this building and qualify it at the same time, engaging in the use of traditional techniques and materials.
