Cal Metre's path

Cal Metre's path

The old centre of Gironella extends above the River Llobregat, on a cliff. At the foot of this slope is located the textile colony of Cal Metre. Cal Metre’s path connected the old town and the former colony and was an underused place. After the location of an elevator to facilitate access to the historic centre, this path has become an everyday road. The intervention responds to a demand for accessibility improvement and intends to turn this old path into a place to contemplate the river landscape and also a stage for activities. The project seeks to enhance the relation between the walkway and the river, proposing a series of meeting spaces materialized by reusing paving stones from the streets of the historic centre, installed with an open joint to enable the growth of vegetation. Two intensities are differentiated in the pavements: a central strip made with an exposed aggregate concrete continuous paving and soft side margins. The limits of the concrete pavement are softened by creating a greenway where spontaneous vegetation grows.
