The Mercat de Sant Antoni occupies an entire block and is shaped like a Greek cross, its geometry and dimension is typical of Eixample alignments. The central octagon, crowned with a large dome, comes from the traditional crossing of the Plan Cerdà. The project proposes the complete restoration of the historic building and the construction of 4 underground levels to house new commercial space and support services. The rehabilitation of the building emphasizes its monumental and historical character with the restoration of the structural and façade elements. Inside, the new layout of stands respects the central axes to perceive the complete diagonal space of the block. The newly recovered glazed ceramic tile roof and the central dome clad in terracotta pieces blend with the rest of the market’s structural and construction elements. Because of the existence of an underground part of the bastion and moat of Sant Antoni the project proposes the complete maintenance of this part, making possible to integrate it as a new public urban space.
